The descent of HARRY ANDREW PEROWNE (b.1849)

The birth of HARRY ANDREW PEROWNE (1849 -1931) does not appear in the index at Somerset House. According to his daughter Emmeline (Botten), (8)(f) below, (letter dated 29th November 1972), he was born in Norwich, but (letter dated 30th July 1973 from Miss Audrey Botten, (8) (f) (iii) below),

“..although the family came from Norwich, her father spent a great deal of his youth in France”;

perhaps he was born in there. His marriage (1870c) to Eliza Bidabeck (var. Beiderbeck) is also not to be found in the Index at Somerset House; from her maiden name it is possible that Eliza was of foreign birth and the marriage may also have taken place overseas.

Emmeline Botten states further that her father was, latterly “of private means, but early in life worked for an uncle’s (his or hers?) transport business”. In her Birth Certificate he is entered as ‘Carman’: in his own Death Certificate as “formerly a Fishmonger (Master)”; both can be held to endorse Mrs Botten’s recollections. The only “transport business” of which we have any note is that of JOSEPH WILLIAM BETTS PEROWNE (1848-1905), the cab-proprietor of Islington Joseph William in thedescent of David Pieron; and it may be more than a coincidence that neither his birth (1848) nor that of his brother JOHN SMITH BENJAMIN PEROWNE (1843) are entered at Somerset House, nor has the marriage (1840c) been uncovered there, or in Norwich. We havein that context surmised that these events have occurred outside England and Wales; if HARRY ANDREW (1849) was the third son of JOHN SMITH PEROWNE (1808-1883), JOSEPH WILLIAM, the cabby, would be an uncle of Emmeline Botten.

In this context William Thomas Botten, (8)(f) below, recalls (letter dated 30-July-1973 from miss Audrey Botten) an uncle of his wife Emmeline, believed to have been “something in the city”, as well as an aunt named Harriet, who lived in Guernsey CI and kept a small hotel there. We have perhaps not surprisingly no record of this Harriet’s birth or marriage, but the uncle in the city could well be JOHN SMITH PEROWNE’s eldest son JOHN SMITH BENJAMIN (1843-1899), D/1(7)(a), described at his marriage as “Commercial Clerk”, of City Road, London EC1. It may be thought that HARRY ANDREW (and possibly his sister Harriet) could with some reason take their places at D/1(7)(c) and D/1(7)d) respectively; without more positive evidence, the “Perownes of Dulwich” must here be presented unattached.
